Drawn to Stitch
Drawn to Stitch is a newly formed group of Contemporary Textile Artists who initially came together to support, mutually challenge, enhance and promote each others work and ideas. To challenge peoples pre-conceptions that Textiles is not a true art form. We aim to take our artwork and promote it to a wider audience, and to bridge the gap between traditional craft and original art.
'Textiles are a medium of great flow and movement, of tremendous versatility and dimensionality, yet textile art is often devalued. Precisely because craft and cloth are typically viewed as secondary to art and canvas.'*
As a group we all share a love of stitch, whether it is by hand or machine, a love of expressing ourselves through the medium of textiles, albeit in very differing styles. A love for textile in all its forms. A desire to teach and share our knowledge with others...
A final thought from Sheila Martineau (2007) which sums up our aspirations behind our group and artwork:
'... when technique, process, and the concept all work together to make a specific statement and create an emotional connection: not as art as utopian, not art as an aesthetic, not 'art for art's sake', but art as a discerning act of passion and purpose in a world of polarity and paradox."*
Above all we have a true desire to produce art work with passion and purpose and to create an emotional response.
